David Bailey, BSc, CPA, EPA, RTMA, ETMA, Managing Partner

Chartered & European Patent Attorney specialising in Chemistry and Pharmaceuticals

David Bailey, Managing Partner

One of only a few UK patent attorneys to have taken an appeal to the Registered Designs Appeal Tribunal and won, David started his professional life on the other side of the fence – in industrial research. Indeed, it was as a result of having his own work included in patent applications that he developed an interest in the patent profession.

At Brookes Batchellor, David advises clients large and small across the full range of intellectual property rights, focusing in particular on patents protecting:

• pharmaceutical and medical devices.
• imaging, photographic and printing materials / processes.
• packaging materials and products.
• resins, laminates and industrial chemical processes and equipment.

Recent work

• Successfully defended a client against an unjustified threat made by a large multinational food corporation for registered trade mark infringement.
• Successfully overturned the previous long-standing practice of the UK Designs Registry on the registrability of icons.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Nottingham University

David at a glance

Loves about the job:
That every task and every day is different from the one before.

Would rather be:
Walking the cliff tops of the south coast or the hills of Derbyshire, enjoying a picnic by a lake or overlooking the sea or on top of a hill or …

Fantasy dinner party guests would be:
Albert Einstein, Paul Merton and Neil Armstrong.

People would be surprised to know:
I know my way round the console of a theatre organ!

In another life, would have been:
Where do I start … steam engine driver, fireman, stained glass window maker, National Trust gardener, cheese maker?
